Beyond Compression Ratio: A Throughput Analysis of Memory Compression Techniques for GPUs

2023 IEEE 41st International Conference on Computer Design (ICCD), 2023
Memory compression is increasingly used as a technique to synthetically increase the off-chip memory bandwidth of GPUs by transferring data in a compressed format between on-chip and off-chip memory. The increased memory bandwidth results in a speedup for the bandwidth-limited applications.

Preprocessing text to improve compression ratios

Proceedings DCC '98 Data Compression Conference (Cat. No.98TB100225), 2002
Summary form only given. We discuss the use of a text preprocessing algorithm that can improve the compression ratio of standard data compression algorithms, in particular 'bzip2', when used on text files, by up to 20%. The text preprocessing algorithm uses a static dictionary of the English language that is kept separately from the compressed file ...

Compression-ratio-based seizure detection

2013 35th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2013
For wireless seizure monitoring devices seizure detection and data compression are two critical tasks that need to be carefully designed against a very tight power budget to maximize the battery life. These two tasks are usually considered separately and algorithms for each are developed separately.

Tapered-Ratio Compression for Residual Network

2018 International SoC Design Conference (ISOCC), 2018
Residual network is a commonly used convolutional neural network, but as the network becomes wider and deeper, it is becoming more difficult for IoT devices or embedded systems to adopt it due to their hardware constraints. Network compression using knowledge distillation is helpful to overcome this problem.

A Study of a Compression Ratio Control Mechanism for a Multiple-Link Variable Compression Ratio Engine

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2007
<div class="htmlview paragraph">An engine compression ratio control system, consisting of a multiple-link mechanism, must be capable of both varying and holding the compression ratio under a condition of torque fluctuations caused by the cylinder pressure and inertial force from moving parts.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">A ...

Generalized Equation for Compression Ratio

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1988
Abstract For highly compressible normally consolidated saturated soil the compression index, Cc, is not constant over the entire pressure range. However, the ratio of the compression index and the initial specific volume, generally known as the compression ratio, appears to be constant.

Variable Compression Ratio Engines

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2009
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The main focus of this work is to study variable compression ratio engines. The study begins with an analyze of the benefits of a variable compression ratio for Otto Cycle engines including mechanisms that already exist, the usual constructive solutions and the project criteria adopted in the area.</div> < ...

Compression Ratio and Multifuel Capability

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1964
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes tests conducted to determine the effect of increased compression ratio on the multifuel capability of a standard diesel engine. The tests included power and cold starting capability checks, and it was found that the thermal efficiency was increased, combustion at full-load was improved, and ...

Prediction of compression ratio in lossy compression of noisy images

2016 13th International Conference on Modern Problems of Radio Engineering, Telecommunications and Computer Science (TCSET), 2016
Requirements to data transmission in communication lines or to image storage can be such that methods of lossy image compression have to be applied. However, for many techniques of lossy image compression it is not an easy task to provide a desired compression ratio.
