The evolutionary advantage of fitness‐dependent recombination in diploids: A deterministic mutation–selection balance model

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Recombination's omnipresence in nature is one of the most intriguing problems in evolutionary biology. The question of why recombination exhibits certain general features is no less interesting than that of why it exists at all.

Epidemics on networks: Reducing disease transmission using health emergency declarations and peer communication

open access: yesInfectious Disease Modelling, 2020
Understanding individual decisions in a world where communications and information move instantly via cell phones and the internet, contributes to the development and implementation of policies aimed at stopping or ameliorating the spread of diseases. In

Assessing and Interpreting the Within-Body Biogeography of Human Microbiome Diversity

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2018
A human body hosts a relatively independent microbiome including five major regional biomes (i.e., airway, oral, gut, skin, and urogenital). Each of them may possess different regional characteristics with important implications to our health and ...

Semen Microbiome Biogeography: An Analysis Based on a Chinese Population Study

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Investigating inter-subject heterogeneity (or spatial distribution) of human semen microbiome diversity is of important significance. Theoretically, the spatial distribution of biodiversity constitutes the core of microbiome biogeography.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Evolution of Computing

open access: yes, 2023
AbstractComputers and computing emerged within a lifetime and completely changed our world. Although their history is brief, the change they precipitated has been rapid and constant. Today’s world would be unimaginably different without these machines. Not necessarily worse, but certainly slower, static, disconnected, and poorer.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Behavioral and neuronal responses of two mouse species, Mus musculus and Mus spicilegus, to con- and heterospecific olfactory signals

open access: yesВавиловский журнал генетики и селекции, 2017
The behavioral and neuronal responses of the males of two closely related species of mice (Mus musculus  wagneri, M. spicilegus) to the urine odors of estrus con- and heterospecific females were studied.

Measuring single cell divisions in human tissues from multi-region sequencing data

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Quantifying somatic evolutionary processes in cancer and healthy tissue is a challenge. Here, the authors use single time point multi-region sampling of cancer and normal tissue, combined with evolutionary theory, to quantify in vivo mutation and cell ...

Inter-Individual Diversity Scaling Analysis of the Human Virome With Classic Diversity-Area Relationship (DAR) Modeling

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2021
The human virome is a critical component of the human microbiome, and it is believed to hold the richest diversity within human microbiomes. Yet, the inter-individual scaling (changes) of the human virome has not been formally investigated to the best of
