Educational Computing and Computer Science

open access: yesIssues and Trends in Educational Technology, 2015
The resurgence of interest in teaching computational thinking (CT) to K-12 students is an opportunity to provide students with a critical foundational skill. This will only be possible, however, if CT is understood to be separable from the more specific field of Computer Science.

Comprehensive profiling of lncRNAs and mRNAs enriched in small extracellular vesicles for early noninvasive detection of colorectal cancer: diagnostic panel assembly and extensive validation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small extracellular vesicles are a promising source of diagnostic molecules. We conducted a comprehensive study, including transcriptome profiling and RT‐qPCR validation on large cohorts of samples. Diagnostic panels enabling sensitive detection of colorectal cancer and precancerous lesions were established. Some molecules were differentially expressed

Pericytes change function depending on glioblastoma vicinity: emphasis on immune regulation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pericytes alter their transcriptome depending on their proximity to the tumor core. In the tumor core, pericytes display a more active state with higher communication strength but with lower immune activation potential and a shift toward extracellular matrix production.

Mechanistic models in computational social science

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2015
Quantitative social science is not only about regression analysis or, in general, data inference. Computer simulations of social mechanisms have an over 60 years long history. They have been used for many different purposes—to test scenarios, to test the

Computational Archival Science [PDF]

open access: yesModerna arhivistika, 2018
The digitisation of archival materials and ingest of digitally born materials in digital archives has led to the possibilities of application of the big data analytical principles in the digital archives. The author explains the 5V characteristics of big data. He proceeds to define the concept of Computational Archival Science (CAS).

Looking for Design in Materials Design

open access: yes, 2004
Despite great advances in computation, materials design is still science fiction. The construction of structure-property relations on the quantum scale will turn computational empiricism into true design.Comment: 3 pages, 1 ...

Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...
