Using Quantum Computers to Learn Physics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Since its inception at the beginning of the twentieth century, quantum mechanics has challenged our conceptions of how the universe ought to work; however, the equations of quantum mechanics can be too computationally difficult to solve using existing computers for even modestly large systems.

A Variational Beam Model for Failure of Cellular and Truss‐Based Architected Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
Herein, a versatile and efficient beam modeling framework is developed to predict the nonlinear response and failure of cellular, truss‐based, and woven architected materials. It enables the exploration of their design space and the optimization of their mechanical behavior in the nonlinear regime. A variational formulation of a beam model is presented

Topology Optimization of Lattice Support Structure for Cantilever Beams Fabricated Via Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView., 2023
A numerical scheme is presented to design a lattice support for metallic components additively built via laser powder bed fusion. Results show that thermal‐induced distortion can be respectively reduced by 69%, 58%, and 50% in comparison to a uniform lattice, a fully solid support, and a truss‐based lattice support.

Critical computational social science

open access: yesEPJ Data Science
In her 2021 IC2S2 keynote talk, “Critical Data Theory,” Margaret Hu builds off Critical Race Theory, privacy law, and big data surveillance to grapple with questions at the intersection of big data and legal jurisprudence.

A Meta-Theory of Boundary Detection Benchmarks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Human labeled datasets, along with their corresponding evaluation algorithms, play an important role in boundary detection. We here present a psychophysical experiment that addresses the reliability of such benchmarks. To find better remedies to evaluate

Computational urban science needs to go beyond computational

open access: yesComputational Urban Science
In this paper, I advocate for a radical expansion of computational urban science to encompass a multidisciplinary, human-centered approach, addressing the inadequacies of traditional methodologies in capturing the complexities of urban life.
