Parallel computation in reflection seismology

Journal of Applied Geophysics, 1995
Abstract Since the introduction of digital data processing in reflection seismology, new algorithms have been developed, in pace with the progress of computer power. Massively parallel computers have appeared in the oil industry, and it has been recognized that parallel computation is very attractive in cost performance.

A Python Library for Teaching Computation to Seismology Students

Seismological Research Letters, 2018
Python is at the forefront of scientific computation for seismologists and therefore should be introduced to students interested in becoming seismologists. On its own, Python is open source and well designed with extensive libraries. However, Python code can also be executed, visualized, and communicated to others with "Jupyter Notebooks" ...

A Suite of Educational Computer Programs for Seismology

Seismological Research Letters, 2003
A set of four, public-domain, educational computer programs have been developed that assist a student in learning about earthquakes. These programs are: The programs run under Windows®. They are available at http://www.geol.binghamton.edu/faculty/jones.

A computer program for learning basic refraction seismology

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1995
SeisMiks is a new program for teaching and learning the basics of refraction seismology. It is a menu-driven, Microsoft Windows toolbook application that can be used either in a classroom or in a self-study mode. The theoretical part of the software covers the key principles of seismic refraction as applied to shallow, engineering-geology types of ...

Seismological Computing Center

Physics Today, 1963
The University of Edinburgh has received a grant of $280 700 from the US National Science Foundation to assist in establishing a seismological computing center within the University's Department of Astronomy. The NSF grant will be supplemented by £10 000 capital and £6500 recurrent from the British Treasury.

The Spectral-Element Method, Beowulf Computing, and Global Seismology

Science, 2002
The propagation of seismic waves through Earth can now be modeled accurately with the recently developed spectral-element method. This method takes into account heterogeneity in Earth models, such as three-dimensional variations of seismic wave velocity, density, and crustal thickness.

Requirements Engineering for Computational Seismology Software

2013
Many seismological software applications are developed to support for instance studies of earthquake scenarios, seismic exploration surveys or hazard analysis. Most of these applications were developed in isolation with focus on algorithmic performance, and less emphasized on software’s comprehensibility and maintainability.

Origin of interactive computer graphics in seismology

The Leading Edge, 1991
Ivan Sutherland’s Sketchpad, completed in 1962 and published in 1963, is routinely cited as the first interactive-computer system and causes Sutherland, who developed it for his doctoral dissertation at MIT, to be acknowledged by many authorities as the inventor of computer graphics.

GCLgrid: A three-dimensional geographical curvilinear grid library for computational seismology

Computers & Geosciences, 2006
We developed a general library for handling a class of objects we call geographical curvilinear grids (GCLgrids). A GCLgrid is a distorted, uniform grid that is georeferenced. The GCLgrid library is implemented in an object oriented system with methods that relate points in the grid to a geographic reference frame. A simple example is a spherical shell
