Ympäristöolosuhteiden muutoksista kylmien pihakansien sisäiset lämpötilajakaumat kokevat suuria muutoksia. Nämä lämpötilajakaumien muutokset aiheuttavat piha-kansiin muodonmuutoksia eli pituuden muutoksia ja käyristymiä.
