Refractive index of concentrated colloidal dispersions

This paper describes the measurement and theoretical interpretation of the refractive index, n′, of a range of disordered aqueous colloidal dispersions. Concentrations up to 50% by volume and particle sizes in the range 0.1–1.5 µm were used. All dispersions were highly turbid and required special refractometric methods.

A new generation of inhomogeneous nonimaging optical concentrators is proposed, able to achieve simultaneously high optical efficiency and acceptance solid angle at a given geometrical concentration factor. Amrinone was given to 14 patients with congestive heart failure as an intravenous bolus (1 mg/sec) at doses ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 mg/kg. Simultaneous determinations of cardiac index were made by thermodilution and of amrinone plasma concentration by high-performance liquid chromatography.
