The expression ‘art’ derives from the Latin ‘ars’, which in turn is a translation of the Greek ‘τέχνη’ However, ‘τέχνη’ and ‘ars’ did not mean quite the same thing as ‘art’ does today. The line that joins the latter contemporary expression with its antecedents is continuous but not straight. Over the years the sense of the expressions has altered.
