Analysis of Economic Burden of Seasonal Influenza: An Actuarial Based Conceptual Model

open access: yesJournal of Applied Mathematics, 2017
Analysing the economic burden of the seasonal influenza is highly essential due to the large number of outbreaks in recent years. Mathematical and actuarial models can be considered as management tools to understand the dynamical behavior, predict the ...

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Development of a conceptual model of early systemic sclerosis (scleroderma)

open access: yesOrphanet Journal of Rare Diseases
Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare connective tissue disorder with heterogeneous manifestations. Two predominant subtypes, limited cutaneous SSc (lcSSc) and diffuse cutaneous SSc (dcSSc), are distinguished based on skin involvement ...

Monitoring of circulating tumor DNA allows early detection of disease relapse in patients with operable breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Monitoring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with operable breast cancer can reveal disease relapse earlier than radiology in a subset of patients. The failure to detect ctDNA in some patients with recurrent disease suggests that ctDNA could serve as a supplement to other monitoring approaches.

Current knowledge on Grapevine Trunk Diseases with complex etiology: a systemic approach

open access: yesPhytopathologia Mediterranea, 2020
Among all causes of grapevine decline, Grapevine Trunk Diseases (GTDs) are major concerns for grape growers. This paper reviews knowledge and proposes hypotheses on two major GTDs, esca and Botryosphaeria dieback, and assembles a conceptual model.

Conceptual and computational framework for logical modelling of biological networks deregulated in diseases

open access: yesBriefings in Bioinformatics, 2017
AbstractMathematical models can serve as a tool to formalize biological knowledge from diverse sources, to investigate biological questions in a formal way, to test experimental hypotheses, to predict the effect of perturbations and to identify underlying mechanisms.

LINC01116, a hypoxia‐lncRNA marker of pathological lymphangiogenesis and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The LINC01116 long noncoding RNA is induced by hypoxia and associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates in two cohorts of lung adenocarcinoma patients. Here, we demonstrate that besides its expression in cancer cells, LINC01116 is markedly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells of the tumor stroma in which it participates in hypoxia ...

Cell surface interactome analysis identifies TSPAN4 as a negative regulator of PD‐L1 in melanoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using cell surface proximity biotinylation, we identified tetraspanin TSPAN4 within the PD‐L1 interactome of melanoma cells. TSPAN4 negatively regulates PD‐L1 expression and lateral mobility by limiting its interaction with CMTM6 and promoting PD‐L1 degradation.

A Conceptual Disease Cycle Model to Link the Size of Past and Future Epidemics

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Populations of humans, animals, and plants face ongoing threats from infectious disease epidemics. While host–parasite coevolution plays a central role in shaping these dynamics, epidemics are often studied in isolation. I propose a simple “Disease Cycle”
