Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Helix Alignment, Chevrons, and Edge Dislocations in Twist‐Bend Ferroelectric Nematics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The recently discovered twist‐bend ferroelectric nematic (NTBF) is the new member of the multiferroic family, representing a fluid with an oblique helicoidal (heliconical) periodic structure of spontaneous electric polarization. The work presents a thorough exploration of the material properties of this phase, how the periodic modulation of ...

High volume fly ash as substitution of fine aggregates with the proportion of 50%, 60%, and 70% to the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
Indonesia has plenty of fly ash as waste materials of coalburning thermal power stations. Fly ash was usually used as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete.

Experimental investigation and identification of single and multiple cracks in synthetic fiber concrete beams

open access: yesCase Studies in Construction Materials, 2018
The tensile behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete is recognized as being superior to that of ordinary concrete, and since serviceability is a primary concern in existing design specifications, it is important to evaluate its post-cracking performance ...

Functional Disorder at the Neural Interface: How Disordered Nanostructures Promote Proper Growth and Differentiation in In Vitro Neural Cultures

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work provides a practical guide for neuroengineers to design advanced neural interfaces, embracing and tailoring the concept of functional disorder. By bridging 2D and 3D in vitro models, this work highlights how non‐periodic, spatially heterogeneous, multiscale nanotopography can enable more physiologically relevant platforms for studying neural ...

Experimental Study for Shear Behavior of Hybrid Self-Compacting Concrete Beams

open access: yesJournal of Engineering and Sustainable Development, 2013
This paper discusses shear behavior of hybrid reinforced concrete beams that consist of two different concrete layers: the tension layer is made of normal strength concrete with compressive strength of 25 MPa and the compression layer is made of self ...

Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry for Quantifying Membrane Fouling: Fouling Layer Structure and Chemical Interaction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (Nano SIMS) is established as a powerful analytical tool to visualize and quantify the membrane fouling layers. ABSTRACT Membrane technology has garnered considerable attention for applications in wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Nevertheless, membrane fouling remains a major barrier, yet the lack of

Study on High-Temperature Behavior of Coal Gangue-Based Geopolymer Concrete Beams

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2022
A newly coal gangue-based geopolymer concrete made from alkaline dry powder activator, coal gangue, and fly ash has been proposed by the authors. High-temperature behavior of the proposed geopolymer concrete beams with different cross sections reinforced

Flexoelectricity in Photoconversion: Fundamentals, Materials, and Outlooks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mechanical bending of a flexible cantilever induces a strain gradient in the photoactive material. The resulting flexoelectric field couples with photovoltaic and photoconductive effects, modulating charge generation, separation, and collection. A comparative analysis of oxide perovskites, halide perovskites, and two‐dimensional materials is presented,

Stem Cell Differentiation Disperses Transcriptional Clusters via a Conserved Surface‐Condensate Trajectory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation follows a conserved surface condensate trajectory: H3K27ac super enhancers nucleate large RNA polymerase II clusters that grow and unfold before transcriptional activity disperses them. This work reveals how biophysical forces at enhancer surfaces dynamically build and dismantle stem cell transcription hubs, reshaping cell ...
