Effect of pH Variations in Water Immersion on Concrete Compressive and Tensile Strength

open access: yesRekayasa Sipil
Chemical elements, especially acids, can gradually cause concrete to deteriorate. When concrete deteriorates, the bond between the cement paste and aggregates weakens, decreasing compressive strength. This study aims to analyze the influence of pH levels

Air-Coupled Surface Wave Transmission Measurement Across A Partially Closed Surface-Breaking Crack In Concrete [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Previous researchers have demonstrated that the transmission of surface waves is effective to estimate the depth of a surface-breaking crack in solids. However, most of the results were obtained using a well-defined crack (or notch) in laboratory.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Enhancing Concrete Strength: The Impact of Silica Admixture [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Researchers set out to determine if and by what margins Nano silica reduces the compressive strength of concrete. From seven percent to seventeen percent, silica was an ingredient in the concrete mixture. The mix design for M20 grade concrete was cast in

Comparison of compressive strength in mud bricks with shred tires and concrete particles as sustainable materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Mud bricks consist of clay, water and different materials. Comparing mud bricks to concrete blocks, an evolution in reducing the cost and also in increasing the compressive strength, can be made.

Helix Alignment, Chevrons, and Edge Dislocations in Twist‐Bend Ferroelectric Nematics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The recently discovered twist‐bend ferroelectric nematic (NTBF) is the new member of the multiferroic family, representing a fluid with an oblique helicoidal (heliconical) periodic structure of spontaneous electric polarization. The work presents a thorough exploration of the material properties of this phase, how the periodic modulation of ...
