Hydrology in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: From Fragmentation to Coherent Terrestrial Hydrosphere Science

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract The rapid rise of machine learning (ML) in hydrology has prompted debate about the discipline's scientific relevance. While ML often outperforms traditional models in streamflow prediction, we argue that this reflects a deeper limitation: persistent fragmentation of hydrological science itself.

Key drivers of at‐vessel mortality in demersal sharks

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Chondrichthyans are highly vulnerable to fisheries overexploitation, and postcapture mortality poses a significant threat to most species. Global bycatch mitigation guidelines recommend adopting hierarchical decision‐making approaches tailored to species‐specific vulnerabilities and socioeconomic and regulatory contexts.

Prenatal Expectations as Predictors of Postnatal Coparenting: Moderation Effect of Psychological Distress

open access: yesJournal of Marriage and Family, Volume 88, Issue 1, Page 130-144, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate whether parents' prenatal expectations of coparenting predict their own and their spouse's postnatal coparenting quality, both at the individual level and in terms of daily variability, and whether prenatal psychological distress at the family level moderates these associations. Background Previous research has shown a

The FsrA‐Mediated Iron‐Sparing Response Regulates the Biosynthesis of the Epipeptide EPE in Bacillus subtilis

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 125, Issue 2, Page 108-122, February 2026.
Under iron‐limited conditions, FsrA base‐pairs with the intergenic region between epeX and epeE, enhancing epeE translation and triggering EPE production. Toxin‐mediated cell lysis releases nutrients, including iron, which can be taken up by surviving cells.

Encapsulating ecosystem engineers: alginate beads of biocrusts for restoration efforts

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Introduction Biocrusts are pioneer ecosystem engineers that modify the soil surface by aggregating particles, fixing carbon and nitrogen, and retaining moisture. These functions facilitate the establishment of both cryptogams and vascular plants, making biocrusts increasingly important in ecological restoration.
