Experimental Observation of Modulation Instability and Optical Spatial Soliton Arrays in Soft Condensed Matter [PDF]
In this Letter we report observations of optically induced self-organization of colloidal arrays in the presence of un-patterned counter-propagating evanescent waves.

Compartmentalization of gold nanoparticle clusters in hollow silica spheres and their assembly induced by an external electric field [PDF]
Assembly of plasmonic nanoparticle clusters having hotspots in a specific space is an effective way to efficiently utilize their plasmonic properties. In the assembly, however, bulk-like aggregates of the nanoparticles are readily formed by strong van ...

Brownian motion: a paradigm of soft matter and biological physics [PDF]
This is a pedagogical introduction to Brownian motion on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Einstein's 1905 paper on the subject. After briefly reviewing Einstein's work in its contemporary context, we pursue some lines of further developments and ...

Multivalent Patchy Colloids for Quantitative 3D Self-Assembly Studies. [PDF]
We report methods to synthesize sub-micron- and micron-sized patchy silica particles with fluorescently labeled hemispherical titania protrusions, as well as routes to efficiently characterize these particles and self-assemble these particles into non ...

Controlling anomalous stresses in soft field-responsive systems [PDF]
We report a new phenomenon occurring in field-responsive suspensions: shear-induced anomalous stresses. Competition between a rotating field and a shear flow originates a multiplicity of anomalous stress behaviors in suspensions of bounded dimers ...

Practical applications of small-angle neutron scattering. [PDF]
Recent improvements in beam-line accessibility and technology have led to small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) becoming more frequently applied to materials problems.

Diffusion in Stationary Flow from Mesoscopic Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics [PDF]
We analyze the diffusion of a Brownian particle in a fluid under stationary flow. By using the scheme of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in phase space, we obtain the Fokker-Planck equation which is compared with others derived from kinetic theory and ...

A Positron Lifetime Study of Cooling and Natural Aging of Solutionized Aluminum Alloys
The process during cooling of Al–Mg and Al–Mg–Si alloys from the solutionizing temperature down to 20 °C is interrupted. These states are analyzed with positron lifetime spectroscopy to trace the processes during cooling. In different temperature ranges, two stages of vacancy loss and solute clustering are identified.

Properties of Supersymmetric Integrable Systems of KP Type
The recently proposed supersymmetric extensions of reduced Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) integrable hierarchies in $N =1,2$ superspace are shown to contain in the purely bosonic limit new types of ordinary non-supersymmetric integrable systems.
