Ethology, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2025.European rabbit mothers construct a complex nursery nest, which includes hay and mother’s faeces. By systematically manipulating the composition of nests we found that pups consume both hay and mother’s faeces, and that both components facilitate the transition to solid food postweaning by reducing gut pathology and even death.
