Finite element analysis of feeding in red and gray squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris and Sciurus carolinensis)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Invasive gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) have replaced the native red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) across much of Great Britain over the last century. Several factors have been proposed to underlie this replacement, but here we investigated the potential for dietary competition in which gray squirrels have better feeding performance than ...

Limits on Expanding Relativistic Shells from Gamma-Ray Burst Temporal Structure [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
We calculate the expected envelope of emission for relativistic shells under the assumption of local spherical symmetry. Gamma-Ray Burst envelopes rarely conform to the expected shape, which is similar to a FRED; a fast rise and exponential decay.

In‐vitro puncture experiment using alligator teeth tracks the formation of dental microwear and its association with hardness of the diet

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract With the development of dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA), there has been an increasing application of DMTA for dietary estimation in extant and fossil reptiles, including dinosaurs. While numerous feeding experiments exist for herbivorous mammals, knowledge remains limited for carnivorous reptiles. This study aimed to qualitatively and

Multi‐method analysis for the three‐dimensional reconstruction of muscle fascicles from DiceCT datasets

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Muscle architecture is a major determinant of muscle performance and, in mammalian lineages, has been correlated with both feeding ecology and locomotor behaviors. Over the past decade, contrast‐enhanced micro‐CT (DiceCT) has emerged as an alternative to traditional dissection‐based measurement.

Totoralia, a new conical-shaped mollusk from the middle Cambrian of western Argentina

open access: yesGeologica Acta, 2011
The new genus Totoralia from the late middle Cambrian of El Totoral (Mendoza Province, western Argentina) is described herein. It is a delicate, high, bilaterally symmetrical cone with a sub-central apex and five to seven prominent comarginal ...

New opportunities for bioscaffold‐enabled spinal cord injury repair

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of bioscaffolds for spinal cord injury repair. We summarize the effects of bioscaffold properties on SCI repair, highlight different types of bioscaffolds, various fabrication strategies, and in vivo transformations for the clinical development of SCI‐repairing bioscaffolds.
