An inquiry into the nature of the gamma-ray source 3EG J1828+0142 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The unidentified, low-latitude, $\gamma$-ray source 3EG J1828+0142 presents high levels of variability and a steep spectral index $\Gamma\sim2.7$. Here we propose a model for this source where the high-energy emission is produced by a galactic Kerr ...

Detection of circulating tumor DNA in colorectal cancer patients using a methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed a cost‐effective methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex assay containing tissue‐conserved and tumor‐specific methylation markers. The assay can detect circulating tumor DNA with high accuracy in patients with localized and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Empirical likelihood confidence regions of the parameters in a partially single-index varying-coefficient model

open access: yesOpen Mathematics, 2019
In this paper, we investigate a partially single-index varying-coefficient model, and suggest two empirical log-likelihood ratio statistics for the unknown parameters in the model.

Time Series Estimates of the Italian Consumer Confidence Indicator [PDF]

open access: yes
This work shows that Italian consumer confidence indicator (CCI) is non-stationary and, therefore, can be estimated with the time series methods. It is found that a long-run relationship exists between CCI, short-term interest rate, industrial production

Perspectives in educating molecular pathologists on liquid biopsy: Toward integrative, equitable, and decentralized precision oncology

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Liquid biopsy enables minimally invasive, real‐time molecular profiling through analysis of circulating biomarkers in biological fluids. This Perspective highlights the importance of training pathologists through integrative educational programs, such as the European Masters in Molecular Pathology, to ensure effective and equitable implementation of ...

Critique of Hirsch's citation index: a combinatorial Fermi problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The h-index was introduced by the physicist J.E. Hirsch in 2005 as measure of a researcher's productivity. We consider the "combinatorial Fermi problem" of estimating h given the citation count.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Vaccine confidence plummets in the Philippines following dengue vaccine scare: why it matters to pandemic preparedness

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2019
In November 2017, it was announced that the new dengue vaccine (“Dengvaxia”) had risks for those not previously exposed to dengue. While some countries proceeded with adjusting guidance accordingly, the Philippines reacted with outrage and political ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.
