Part-based and configural processing of owner's face in dogs. [PDF]
Dogs exhibit characteristic looking patterns when looking at human faces but little is known about what the underlying cognitive mechanisms are and how much these are influenced by individual experience.

Perceptual specialization and configural face processing in infancy. [PDF]
Adults' face processing expertise includes sensitivity to second-order configural information (spatial relations among features such as distance between eyes). Prior research indicates that infants process this information in female faces. In the current experiments, 9-month-olds discriminated spacing changes in upright human male and monkey faces but ...

Dysfunction in configural face processing in patients with schizophrenia. [PDF]
Face recognition has important implications for patients with schizophrenia, who exhibit poor interpersonal and social skills. Previous reports have suggested that patients with schizophrenia have deficits in their ability to recognize faces, and because face recognition relies heavily on information about the configuration of faces, we hypothesized ...

Configural processing and face viewpoint.
Configural/holistic processing, a key property of face recognition, has previously been examined only for front views of faces. Here, 6 experiments tested front (0 degrees ), three-quarter (45 degrees ), and profile views (90 degrees ), using composite and peripheral inversion tasks. Results showed an overall disadvantage in identifying profiles.

Perceived Race Affects Configural Processing but Not Holistic Processing in the Composite-Face Task [PDF]
One explanation for the own-race bias in face recognition is the loss of holistic processing for other-race faces. The composite-face task (involving matching the top halves of faces when the bottom halves are either changed or the same) tests holistic ...

Identifying sources of configurality in three face processing tasks [PDF]
Participants performed three feature-complete face processing tasks involving detection of changes in: (1) feature size and (2) feature identity in successive matching tasks, and (3) feature orientation.

Configural Processing Hypothesis and Face-Inversion Effect
Perception and recognition of faces presented upright are better than Perception and recognition of faces presented inverted. The difference between upright and inverted orientations is greater in face recognition than in non-face object recognition.

Human bodies are sometimes cognitively objectified, i.e., processed less configurally and more analytically, in a way that resembles how most objects are perceived.

Identifying sources of configural face processing [PDF]
Absence of a precise definition of configural processing in face perception has resulted in previous demonstrations now being accounted for by decisional rather than perceptual processes(Wenger & Ingvalson, 2002, 2003; Richler, Gauthier, Wenger, & Palmeri, 2008; Cornes, Donnelly, Godwin, & Wenger, 2011).

Previous studies have found that literacy acquisition modulates configural face processing (i.e., holistic and second-order configural processing). However, it remains unclear how literacy acquisition impacts the configural processing indexed by the ...
