Confining and escaping magnetic field lines in tokamaks: Analysis via symplectic maps
In magnetically confined plasma, it is possible to qualitatively describe the magnetic field configuration via phase spaces of suitable symplectic maps.

This paper shows that the configurational temperature of liquid-state theory, $\Tc$, defines an energy scale, which can be used for adjusting model parameters of active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) models in order to achieve approximately invariant structure and dynamics upon a density change.

We denote by ${\mbox{\boldmath $QSL$}}_3$ the family of quadratic differential systems possessing invariant straight lines, finite and infinite, of total multiplicity exactly three. In a sequence of papers the complete study of quadratic systems with invariant lines of total multiplicity at least four was achieved.

Centers and invariant straight lines of planar real polynomial vector fields and its configurations
In the paper, we first give the least upper bound formula on the number of centers of planar real polynomial Hamiltonian vector fields. This formula reveals that the greater the number of invariant straight lines of the vector field and the less the number of its centers.

A numerical method to compute Euler potentials for non dipolar magnetic fields [PDF]
The magnetospheric magnetic field may be conveniently described by two scalar functions (α, β), known as the Euler potentials. They are not uniquely defined, and they may be difficult to derive for configuration more complex than a simple dipole.

Dawn-dusk asymmetry in particles of solar wind origin within the magnetosphere [PDF]
Solar wind/magnetosheath plasma in the magnetosphere can be identified using a component that has a higher charge state, lower density and, at least soon after their entry into the magnetosphere, lower energy than plasma from a terrestrial source.

First results from ideal 2-D MHD reconstruction: magnetopause reconnection event seen by Cluster [PDF]
We have applied a new reconstruction method (Sonnerup and Teh, 2008), based on the ideal single-fluid MHD equations in a steady-state, two-dimensional geometry, to a reconnection event observed by the Cluster-3 (C3) spacecraft on 5 July 2001, 06:23 UT,

In this article we prove a classification theorem (Main theorem) of real planar cubic vector fields which possess two distinct infinite singularities (real or complex) and eight invariant straight lines, including the line at infinity and including ...

Real quartic surfaces containing 16 skew lines
It is well known that there is an open three-dimensional subvariety Ms of the Grassmannian of lines in ℙ3 which parametrizes smooth irreducible complex surfaces of degree 4 which are Heisenberg invariant, and each quartic contains 32 lines but only 16 ...

Sensitivity to Nonaccidental Configurations of Two-Line Stimuli
According to Recognition-By-Components theory, object recognition relies on a specific subset of three-dimensional shapes called geons . In particular, these configurations constitute a powerful cue to three-dimensional object reconstruction because ...
