International Symposium for Testing and Failure Analysis, 2018Abstract This paper explains the CLSM technique and presents surface roughness measurement data from several groups of known authentic and suspect counterfeit parts. Surface roughness is an important characteristic of plastic encapsulated or metal lidded parts because counterfeit parts are often blacktopped or re-polished and remarked.

Quantitative Fluorescence Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM)
1995The confocal imaging geometry provides a dramatic optical advantage for fluorescence microscopy by discriminating against out-of-focus background with minimal loss of image-forming signal. Significant enhancement of both axial and lateral imaging resolution is also available but only with substantial signal loss.
