A novel sulfur‐containing photoinitiator based on benzophenone derivatives for rapid photopolymerization

open access: yesSmart Molecules, EarlyView.
This study develops a series of unimolecular photoinitiators, BP‐S1‐5, by incorporating hydrogen‐donating groups into a benzophenone framework. This method reduces the reliance on co‐initiators, and enables BP‐S1‐5 with efficient photoinitiation and excellent molding capability.

Impact of Droplet Splashing on Biological and Medical Materials Relevant to Clinical Settings

open access: yesSmall Science, EarlyView.
Droplet splashing on biological and medical materials poses contamination risks in clinical settings. Using high‐speed imaging and quantitative modelling, this study reveals how fluid properties and surface features—like roughness and curvature—govern splash dynamics.

Robust β‐Sheet Peptide Reinforced Polymer Fibers

open access: yesSmall Science, EarlyView.
β‐sheet nanocrystals are embedded into a range of different polymeric fibers by introducing a soluble monomer into the spinning dope solution and polymerizing after fiber formation. Polymer crystallization is found in specific polymeric fibers, resulting in an increase in tensile strength 2.2 and 4.3 times for poly(caprolactone) and cellulose acetate ...

Dissociation Constant (Kd) Measurement for Small‐Molecule Binding Aptamers: Homogeneous Assay Methods and Critical Evaluations

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
The characteristics of aptamer is most commonly represented by the dissociation constant (Kd), which is critical for aptamer optimization. Here, the assays used to evaluate Kd, including labeled and label‐free assays, are evaluated and suggestions are made to ensure that true values are obtained, while other methods are cautioned.

A Multipotent Precursor Approach for the Preparation of High‐Molecular Weight Conjugated Polymers with Redox Active Units

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
A versatile precursor approach enables the synthesis of high‐molecular‐weight conjugated polymers with tunable electronic properties from a single dihydroanthracene‐based scaffold. Post‐polymerization transformations afford distinct materials incorporating anthracene or anthraquinone units.

Structural Analysis of Colloidal Titania‐Based Ribbons and Their Self‐Assembly upon Drying

open access: yesSmall Structures, EarlyView.
Synchrotron‐based X‐ray scattering reveals the structure of 1DL lepidocrocite titanate and their self‐assembly. In colloidal dispersion they consist of nanofilaments loosely associated into thin and elongated ribbons. In the dry state, they reach a final state of extended sheets, stacked three to about twenty high.

Helical Carbon Fiber‐Based Phase Change Thermal Interface Materials: Unlocking Superior Thermal Conductivity through Novel Structural Engineering

open access: yesSmall Structures, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel design of helical carbon fiber composites achieving a through‐plane thermal conductivity of 2.97 W m−1 K−1 and 80% rebound rate. Integrated with paraffin wax, the phase change thermal interface material exhibits a thermal conductivity of 3.72 W m−1 K−1, a latent heat of 150 J g−1, and minimal leakage of 1.55 wt%. Effective

Is Deuterium Sequestering by Reactive Carbon Atoms an Important Mechanism to Reduce Deuterium Content in Biological Water?

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, EarlyView.
Deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen, is universal in nature, but it disrupts the mitochondrial ATPase pumps. One mechanism that biological organisms may use to reduce deuterium levels in the mitochondria is to sequester deuterium bound to carbon atoms in a small set of organic molecules that have a unique configuration to support such trapping ...
