Isolation of a new urine metabolite excreted in generalized congenital analgesia

Abstract A new urinary metabolite was identified in eight cases of congenital analgesia, and was shown to be absent in numerous other normal and abnormal patients. The metabolite is excreted in a conjugated form, being hydrolyzed by acid. The isolation and purification of this metabolite is described.

A case of an injured, necrotic tongue in a child of 12 months was investigated. It was found that the patient was suffering from congenital analgesia. The injury was due to errupted lower incisor teeth, and the injury healed following their extraction.

[Childbirth in 2 patients with congenital analgesia].

Pregnancy and labour in two cases of congenital analgesia are reported. Not only was there total absence of labour pains but also no perception of uterine contractions. In both cases the women did not notice the onset of labour till the moment of spontaneous rupture of the membranes.

[Long-term course in congenital analgesia].

We describe the longterm history of eight patients with congenital insensitivity to pain, a rare autosomal recessive condition. Pain perception did not significantly improve with increasing age, but all affected individuals learned to live with their handicap. A marked tendency to dissimulate was obvious.
