Action–effect congruence during observational learning leads to faster action sequence learning

Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 2015
Common coding theory suggests that any action (pressing a piano key) is intimately linked with its resultant sensory effect (an auditory musical tone). We conducted two experiments to explore the effect of varying auditory action–effect patterns during complex action learning.

The role of RT carry-over for congruence sequence effects in masked priming.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2017
The present study disentangles 2 sources of the congruence sequence effect with masked primes: congruence and response time of the previous trial (reaction time [RT] carry-over). Using arrows as primes and targets and a metacontrast masking procedure we found congruence as well as congruence sequence effects.

Different levels of learning interact to shape the congruency sequence effect.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2016
The congruency effect in distracter interference tasks is often reduced after incongruent relative to congruent trials. Moreover, this congruency sequence effect (CSE) is influenced by learning related to concrete stimulus and response features as well as by learning related to abstract cognitive control processes.

Interacting congruency effects in the hybrid Stroop–Simon task prevent conclusions regarding the domain specificity or generality of the congruency sequence effect.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 2020
Although domain-specificity is prevalent in models of human cognition, its presence is not always easy to verify. For example, according to one prominent model, experiencing conflict from an incongruent distractor in a Stroop-like task triggers an upregulation of domain-specific control that facilitates the resolution of the same, but not a different ...

Cognitive control under high threat: the effect of shock on the congruency sequence effect

Motivation and Emotion, 2019
The congruency sequence effect (CSE) refers to the reduced distractor interference following conflict trials compared to following non-conflict trials. According to the affective account, the enhancement of cognitive control necessary to resolve the negative affect caused by conflict drives the CSE.
