Hyperglycemia causes differential change in macrophage population in the lacrimal gland, conjunctiva and cornea [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
BackgroundDue to its location, the ocular surface is exposed to environmental microbes. Innate immune cells including macrophages are first line defense against infections.

Imaging of the calcium activated potassium channel 3.1 (KCa3.1) in vivo using a senicapoc‐derived positron emission tomography tracer

open access: yesArchiv der Pharmazie, Volume 355, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
The 18F‐labeled derivative [18F]3 of senicapoc was synthesized using the prosthetic group approach with 1‐azido‐2‐[18F]fluoroethane ([18F]6) in a “click” reaction. The biological activity of the new positron emission tomography tracer was evaluated in vitro and in vivo.

PAF‐induced inflammatory and immuno‐allergic ophthalmic diseases and their mitigation with PAF receptor antagonists: Cell and nuclear effects

open access: yesBioFactors, Volume 48, Issue 6, Page 1226-1249, November/December 2022., 2022
Abstract Ocular allergies are becoming more prevalent as more airborne pollutants, irritants and microbes pervade our environment. Inflammatory and allergic mediators released by dendritic and mast cells within the conjunctiva cause allergic conjunctivitis (AC), a prevalent ocular surface disorder that affects >40% of the world's human population on a ...

Ocular Surface Inflammatory Disorders (OSID): A Collective of Systemic Etiologies Which Cause or Amplify Dry Eye Syndrome

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2022
The ocular surface inflammatory disorders (OSID) are caused by systemic disorders that conduct a persistent inflammatory reaction in the ocular adnexal connective tissues, such as the conjunctiva, lacrimal gland (LG) and meibomian glands (MGs), which ...

An observational study to determine the optimal physical evaluation site for detecting anemia. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Gen Fam Med
Typically, for detecting anemia, primary care physicians subjectively judge whether or not a patient is pale by looking at the color of the conjunctiva, lips, nails, and palms. In this study, we have identified which part of the body is most suitable for assessing paleness.

Masson's tumor of the ocular surface – A rare clinical entity

open access: yesOman Journal of Ophthalmology, 2022
Masson's tumor or intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) is a benign vascular lesion usually involving the head-and-neck region. On histopathological examination, it consists of reactive proliferation of endothelial cells with papillary ...

Laser Doppler holography of the anterior segment for blood flow imaging, eye tracking, and transparency assessment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Laser Doppler holography (LDH) is a full-field blood flow imaging technique able to reveal human retinal and choroidal blood flow with high temporal resolution. We here report on using LDH in the anterior segment of the eye without making changes to the instrument.

Long‐term follow‐up and health‐related quality of life among cancer survivors with stage IEA orbital‐type lymphoma after external photon‐beam radiotherapy: Results from a longitudinal study

open access: yesHematological Oncology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 922-929, December 2022., 2022
Abstract We assessed the long‐term outcomes and treatment‐related adverse effects of patients with Stage I, “orbital‐type” lymphomas that were uniformly treated with photons. All consecutive patients diagnosed with low‐grade, Ann Arbor Stage IEA orbital lymphoma treated between 1999 and 2020 at our department were retrospectively reviewed.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma arising from palpebral conjunctiva: A rare presentation

open access: yesIndian Journal of Ophthalmology, 2018
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the conjunctiva usually arises from the limbal conjunctiva. Rarely, it can arise from the palpebral conjunctiva. We report a case of primary conjunctival SCC of the palpebral conjunctiva which was treated successfully.

Differentially Expressed Gene Pathways in the Conjunctiva of Sjögren Syndrome Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
Sjögren syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune condition that targets the salivary and lacrimal glands, with cardinal clinical signs of dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca, KCS) and dry mouth.
