Yet among the Damara pastoralists with whom I work, people now increasingly describe feeling shame (taob) when they ask for food. In this article, I trace this shift to the affective dynamics of social class formation.

Cutting freedom down to size Liberté calibrée
Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.Freedom, as a concept and a value, presents limited prospects for anthropological comparison. The study of enslavement, much neglected in attempts to develop an anthropology of freedom, shows that freedom has been imagined by the enslaved as the opposite of their condition only under particular circumstances.

It is shown that XVS occurs mainly within reported speech and in embedded clauses.

Gender &History, EarlyView.ABSTRACT In 1977, an Israeli transgender woman, Judy Spotheim, published an autobiographical novel entitled The Cut. It describes the emergence of a trans community in the commercial‐sex areas of Tel Aviv‐Jaffa, hoping to humanise trans women (coccinelles). This article is the first to study the novel and present a biography of Spotheim.
