HOWLish: a CNN for automated wolf howl detection

Automated detection of wolf howls presents a great opportunity for large‐scale passive acoustic monitoring of wolf populations. Here we present HOWLish, a CNN trained for automated wolf howl detection, based on thousands of hours of soundscapes recorded in the wild.

Stable Isotope Analysis as a Tool to Prevent Illicit Wildlife Trade of Songbirds in Brazil

Feather isotopes provide clear differences between wild and captive songbirds in Brazil. Combining multiple isotopes improved classification accuracy and revealed individuals falsely declared as captive‐bred. These results demonstrate the potential of isotope analysis to detect wildlife laundering in the bird trade.

Seasonality as a structuring factor of the dung beetle community in burned neotropical savannas

We tested the effects of fire, vegetation cover and seasonality on dung beetle communities, focusing on species richness, composition and co‐occurrence patterns in savannas. Fire did not affect species richness. However, seasonality was the dominant factor influencing species composition, followed by fire and vegetation cover.

Where water meets rock: Ecological niches and diversity hotspots of hygropetric beetles in the Neotropics

First continental‐scale synthesis of hygropetric beetle diversity and distribution across Neotropical highlands. Climatic and topographic gradients structure regional assemblages and niche overlap. Ecological convergence suggests adaptation to similar conditions across disjunct regions.
