A Trait-Based Approach to Self-Organized Pattern Formation in Ecology

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2020
Significant effort in the study of self-organized pattern formation has focused on the physical conditions of the ecosystem. But what about the organisms involved? Can just any species form patterns or are certain traits required?

Species Conservation Dependence on a Reliable Taxonomy as Emphasized by the Extinction Risk Assessment of Grindelia atlantica (Asteraceae: Astereae)

open access: yesConservation
Accurate taxonomy is fundamental for assessing extinction risks and implementing conservation strategies. We evaluated the extinction risk of Grindelia atlantica (Asteraceae), endemic to southern Brazil, using the IUCN criteria, and comparing three scenarios of taxonomic accuracy and data availability.

Ecology and conservation of bryophytes and lichens on Fagus sylvatica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Environmental factors related to the occurrence of epiphytic bryophytes and lichens were examined in beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests in the Province of Halland, Sweden.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Protected areas unevenly contribute to terrestrial vertebrate habitat conservation in China

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Ensuring habitat representativeness is fundamental to area-based conservation, yet the effectiveness and efficiency of individual protected areas in meeting this goal remain underexamined, potentially impeding targeted strategies.

Crosstalk between the ribosome quality control‐associated E3 ubiquitin ligases LTN1 and RNF10

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of the E3 ligase LTN1, the ubiquitin‐like modifier UFM1, or the deubiquitinating enzyme UFSP2 disrupts endoplasmic reticulum–ribosome quality control (ER‐RQC), a pathway that removes stalled ribosomes and faulty proteins. This disruption may trigger a compensatory response to ER‐RQC defects, including increased expression of the E3 ligase RNF10 ...

Fine-scale distribution modeling of ocellated lizard (Timon lepidus), in a peri-urban landscape

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
The peri-urban space is highly dynamic and concentrates antagonistic pressures of urban development and biodiversity preservation. The unstable nature of this transitional landscape leads to fast changes in the distribution of anthropic and natural ...

Model simplification of signal transduction pathway networks via a hybrid inference strategy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A full-scale mathematical model of cellular networks normally involves a large number of variables and parameters. How to effectively develop manageable and reliable models is crucial for effective computation, analysis and design of such systems.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

From colonial fortresses to neoliberal landscapes in Northern Tanzania: a biopolitical ecology of wildlife conservation

open access: yesJournal of Political Ecology, 2018
Drawing on critical debates in political ecology and biopolitics, the article develops a "biopolitical ecology of conservation" to study historical shifts in how human and nonhuman lives come to be valued in an asymmetric way.
