Measuring the effectiveness of conservation: a novel framework to quantify the benefits of sage-grouse conservation policy and easements in Wyoming. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Increasing energy and housing demands are impacting wildlife populations throughout western North America. Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus), a species known for its sensitivity to landscape-scale disturbance, inhabits the same low ...

Basic Steps to Creating a Conservation Land Trust in Florida

open access: yesEDIS, 2019
Conservation land trusts, more commonly called land trusts, are private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that protect land important to your community for its natural, cultural, and recreational value.

Land Trusts in Florida: A Brief Guide to Land Trusts for Protecting Land in your Community

open access: yesEDIS, 2017
A land trust is a private nonprofit organization that owns and manages land to protect its natural, economic, and cultural value.  This document provides an overview of the role that land trusts plan in conservation, and how landowners may contact or ...

The effects of conservation easements on bird biodiversity in the Shenandoah and Piedmont regions of Virginia

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice
Conservation easements—voluntary legal agreements in which a landowner forfeits some development rights in exchange for tax incentives—have become a central part of efforts to limit development in the US. Given the importance of biodiversity conservation

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Smaller is better: nanobodies meet NMR

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nanobodies are single‐domain antigen‐binding fragments derived from camelid heavy chain antibodies. Their small size, high stability, and exceptional specificity make nanobodies uniquely useful probes for NMR studies of protein dynamics, transient conformational states, and protein–protein interactions.

Do Residual Development Options Increase Preserved Farmland Values?

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, 2013
Previous research has reached inconsistent, if not paradoxical, conclusions regarding the impact of conservation easements on farmland prices. Expectations of price reductions, strongly grounded in economic theory, are not always observed.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Wildland-Urban Interface Case Study: Land Conservation along the Suwannee River

open access: yesEDIS, 2010
FR232, a 4-page illustrated fact sheet by Lauren McDonell and Martha C. Monroe, discusses how the Suwannee River Water Management District successfully used conservation easements to restrict development, protect natural resources, and improve ecology ...

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...
