The Realities of Community Based Natural Resource Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This is an historic overview of conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa from pre-colonial times through the present. It demonstrates that Africans practiced conservation that was ignored by the colonial powers.

A Functional 2D Carbon Allotrope Combining Nanoporous Graphene and Biphenylene Segments

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis of a novel nanoporous graphene (NPG) is reported with biphenylene segments via thermal fusion of 12‐armchair porous graphene nanoribbons grown on gold surfaces. Characterization using STM, AFM, and DFT reveals low‐defect semiconducting behaviour and tunable band gaps.

Evidence for multiple introductions of an invasive wild bee species currently under rapid range expansion in Europe

open access: yesBMC Ecology and Evolution, 2021
Background Invasive species are increasingly driving biodiversity decline, and knowledge of colonization dynamics, including both drivers and dispersal modes, are important to prevent future invasions. The bee species Megachile sculpturalis (Hymenoptera:

Multiphysics‐Driven Assembly of Biomimetic Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Artificial extracellular vesicles, derived from cell membranes, are manufactured using a multiphysics‐integrated microfluidic platform that combines nanoknife membrane rupture, herringbone chaotic mixing, and acoustothermal modulation. This standardizable workflow enables the predictable control of vesicle formation and therapeutic loading, while ...

Modeling the influence of rhizodeposits on root water uptake

open access: yesVadose Zone Journal
The chemical compounds that plant roots release into the soil, referred to as rhizodeposits, affect soil hydraulic properties like the surface tension and viscosity of soil water, and the contact angle between menisci and the pore surface.
