The wave equation for stiff strings and piano tuning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We study the wave equation for a string with stiffness. We solve the equation and provide a uniqueness theorem with suitable boundary conditions. For a pinned string we compute the spectrum, which is slightly inharmonic.

Relative Exchangeable Copper Confirms Wilson Disease and Supports Reclassification of the ATP7B p.Met665Ile Variant With Conflicting Pathogenicity Evidence

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wilson disease (WD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism caused by ATP7B mutations. Diagnosis is usually straightforward in symptomatic patients, but can be challenging in children and adolescents with mild liver disease, borderline urinary copper excretion, or inconclusive genetic findings.

Why policies succeed or fail: the importance of 'policy consonance'

open access: yesInternational Review of Public Policy
This article takes stock of the literature on policy success and policy failure. The huge amount of studies on the subject does not provide a clear and agreed answer to the question: what determines the success or failure of a policy? The paper attempts ...

Comparative cranial biomechanics reveal macroevolutionary trends in theropod dinosaurs, with emphasis on Tyrannosauroidea

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Tyrannosaurus is viewed as a model organism in vertebrate paleontology, with numerous studies analyzing its feeding biomechanics. Nonetheless, the evolution of this feeding performance has been under‐addressed in Tyrannosauroidea, especially in basal tyrannosauroids. Here we used muscle‐force reconstruction and finite element analysis (FEA) to

A Concept for Exploring Western Music Tonality in Physical Space [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Musical theory about the structure and morphology of Western tonality is quite difficult to teach to young children, due to the relatively complex mathematical concepts behind tonality.

Autistic Children With Speech Onset Delay Show Reversed Bias in Spectral Versus Temporal Auditory Processing

open access: yesAutism Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A recent “hierarchical” reinterpretation of the neurological basis of autism suggests that in autism with early language delay, perceptual processing may be favored over the integration of transmodal information. This model is largely based on neuroimaging findings relating to visual processing, but predicts a corresponding reorganization in ...

The spike train statistics for consonant and dissonant musical accords

open access: yes, 2009
The simple system composed of three neural-like noisy elements is considered. Two of them (sensory neurons or sensors) are stimulated by noise and periodic signals with different ratio of frequencies, and the third one (interneuron) receives the output ...

Auditory Sensitivity in Autism: A Systematic Review of Mismatch Negativity and Mismatch Field Responses

open access: yesAutism Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Auditory mismatch responses—mismatch negativity (MMN) and mismatch fields (MMF)—are well established electrophysiological markers of automatic auditory discrimination supported by short‐term sensory memory. These responses, typically elicited using passive oddball paradigms, are increasingly used to investigate sensory and language processing ...

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NOTIONS ”CONSONANCE” AND “DISSONANCE”

open access: yesStudia Universitatis Babeş-Bolyai. Musica, 2008
From a historical point of view, the phenomenon called consonance/dissonance has been perceived under three main trends: the first one – mathematical; the second one – acoustical and psychological and the third one – contextual.

Zuranolone: A case study in (regulatory) rush to judgement?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Sage, in collaboration with Biogen, submitted a new drug approval for zuranolone for postpartum depression (PPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) in December 2022. In August 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration granted approval for PPD but denied approval for MDD.
