A cross-linguistic database of phonetic transcription systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Contrary to what non-practitioners might expect, the systems of phonetic notation used by linguists are highly idiosyncratic. Not only do various linguistic subfields disagree on the specific symbols they use to denote the speech sounds of languages, but

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Web-based pronunciation training and learning consonant clusters among EFL learners

open access: yesActa Psychologica
Arab learners of English often face challenges when it comes to correctly pronouncing English consonant clusters. To address these difficulties, technology-driven methods can be employed to enhance the acquisition of proper English consonant cluster ...

initial consonant cluster in sistani dialect- non- linear phonology [PDF]

open access: yesمطالعات زبان‌‌ها و گویش‌های غرب ایران, 2015
Autosegmental phonology has been presented by Goldsmith(1976) who introduced phonological representation as a multi-layer system and studied it in a multi-dimensional space where each dimension has its independent features.

Perception of /s/-consonant clusters [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1988
Nonsense syllables /s/C/at/, where C was /p,t,k,f,m,n,l,w/, were recorded then degraded either by noise or by reverberation. The goal was to compare the effects of reverberant overlap of high-frequency energy of /s/ with masking by speech spectrum noise on the identification of the consonants.

The Relationship Between English and Polish Rhythm Measures in Polish Learners of English [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper investigates native and non-native speech rhythm in the speech of Polish learners of English at an intermediate/upper-intermediate level. More specifically, it attempts to explore the relationship between rhythm measures scores in L1 Polish ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
