Does Trochanteric Step Osteotomy Provide Greater Stability Than Classic Slide Osteotomy? A Preliminary Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The use of a trochanteric slide osteotomy needs a partial weightbearing period to allow safe healing of the osteotomy. We compared the initial rigidity of fixation of the trochanteric slide osteotomy with that of a newly developed technique, the ...

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.

An approximate JKR solution for a general contact, including rough contacts

open access: yes, 2017
In the present note, we suggest a simple closed form approximate solution to the adhesive contact problem under the so-called JKR regime. The derivation is based on generalizing the original JKR energetic derivation assuming calculation of the strain ...

Pixelation‐Free, Monolithic Iontronic Pressure Sensors Enabling Large‐Area Simultaneous Pressure and Position Recognition via Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A pixelation‐free, monolithic iontronic pressure sensor enables simultaneous pressure and position sensing over large areas. AC‐driven ion release generates spatially varying impedance pathways depending on the pressure. Machine learning algorithms effectively decouple overlapping pressure–position signals from the multichannel outputs, achieving high ...

Gourd‐Inspired Design of Unit Cell with Multiple Gradients for Physiological‐Range Pressure Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Gourd‐shaped micro‐dome arrays with coordinated modulus, conductivity, and geometric gradients co‐optimize sensitivity and linearity in piezoresistive tactile sensors. Under pressure, a solid upper dome embeds into a porous lower dome, triggering rapid contact‐area growth and series‐to‐parallel conduction, enabling unsaturated, intensity‐resolved ...

Mode 1 delamination growth in adhesively bonded joints under static and fatigue loads [PDF]

open access: yes
The objective of this investigation was to characterize the pure mode 1 delamination growth in metal to metal adhesively bonded joints under static and fatigue loading conditions, using FM 73 adhesive. Double cantilever beam specimens (DCB) were used for

Experimental and Numerical Study of Wrought Inconel 718 Under Thermal Cycles of Variable Amplitude Coupled with Mechanical Loading

open access: yesMetals
In this paper, a pulsed laser is applied to realize these complicated thermal cycles experimentally, coupling with the constant mechanical loading with the self-designed sample holder. A numerical simulation model is proposed to calculate the temperature

Effects of surface structure deformation on static friction at fractal interfaces

open access: yes, 2013
The evolution of fractal surface structures with flattening of asperities was investigated using isotropically roughened aluminium surfaces loaded in compression. It was found that asperity amplitude, mean roughness and fractal dimension decrease through

Nanothermometry in Living Cells: Physical Limits, Conceptual and Material Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Heat and temperature are fundamental to life. When nanothermometers began probing regions as small as a living cell, they triggered controversial claims of large intracellular temperature gradients. We review physical constraints energy‐conservation, entropy production, thermodynamic fluctuations, and molecular dynamics.
