On the physical interpretation of constant phase elements

Solid State Ionics, 2009
Abstract Complex impedance spectra of ion-conducting lithium borate network glasses are used to study the deformed shape of impedance semicircles which are usually described by a parallel circuit of an ohmic resistor and a phenomenological Constant Phase Element (CPE). Based on the Concept of Mismatch and Relaxation (CMR) of Funke et al.

A constant phase element sensor for monitoring microbial growth

Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, 2006
The construction and performance of a novel constant phase element (CPE) sensor for monitoring microbial growth has been reported in this paper. The signal conditioning circuit measures the changes in the phase angle of the impedance characteristics of the probe.

Emulation of a constant phase element using operational transconductance amplifiers

Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing, 2015
The concept of emulating a constant phase element by an active scheme is presented in this work. Starting from a novel setup where the characteristics of the element could be easily derived, the emulation of the constant phase element is performed through a scheme that employs a differentiator and a voltage-to-current converter.

On a possible physical origin of the constant phase element

Electrochimica Acta, 2016
Abstract Despite the numerous use of the constant phase element (CPE) in the modeling of the impedance characteristics of the electrochemical systems, the physical reasoning of this non-intuitive element is not clear. In this paper, the CPE impedance is analytically calculated using the anomalous diffusion theory.

Contribution of Surface Roughness to Constant-Phase Element (CPE) Behavior

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2015
While CPEs are commonly used to improve the fit to experimental impedance spectra, the explanation for their origin has been largely conjectural.  In early experiments on solid electrodes, micro-scale surface roughness was believed to contribute to the non-ideality of electrochemical measurements.1 Borisova and Ershler were the first to
