The lemniscate constants, and indeed some of the methods used for actually computing them, have played an enormous part in the development of mathematics. An account is given here of some of the methods used—most of the derivations can be made by elementary methods.

A Constant that Isn’t Constant
Focus, 2001Spectra from distant quasars imply that a fundamental physical constant may have been increasing slightly over the past six billion years.

When constants are not constant
Physics World, 2001In the movie The Meaning of Life, the Monty Python team reminds us that we live in "an amazing and expanding universe". Ever since the startling evidence for cosmic expansion was discovered in the 1920s, physicists have considered the possibility that the so-called constants of nature–such as the charge on the electron and the gravitational constant ...

Abstract The Rydberg constant is one of the most important constants of atomic physics bemuse of its connection with the fundamental atomic constants (e, h, mc, c), and because of the high accuracy with which it can be determined. In this review the Rydberg constant is seen in its historical context, in relation to the spectra of hydrogen and ionized ...

alfa: a constant that is not a constant?
2003We review the observational information on the constancy of the fine structure constant a . We find that small improvements on the measurement of 187 Re lifetime can provide significant progress in exploring the range of variability suggested by QSO data. We also discuss the effects of a time varying a on stellar structure and evolution.

The standard equilibrium constant, K⊖(T), for a chemical reaction is a dimensionless quantity defined by K⊖(T)=exp{−ΔrG⊖(T)/RT}, where ΔrG⊖(T) is the change in the standard molar Gibbs energy due to the reaction. The value of K⊖(T) depends on the choice of the standard state, which must be specified.
