Complete deficiency of constitutive heterochromatin on a human chromosome 9

Human Genetics, 1979
In cultured amniotic fluid cells a mediocentric chromosome 9 appeared to be completely deficient in constitutive heterochromatin when stained with distamycin A and DAPI. In addition, this deficient chromosome was found in a blood cell culture from the father. Both the father and the child after birth were phenotypically normal.

Constitutive heterochromatin and transposable elements in Drosophila melanogaster

1997
Several families of transposable elements (TEs), most of them belonging to the retrotransposon category, are particularly enriched in Drosophila melanogaster constitutive heterochromatin. The enrichment of TE-homologous sequences into heterochromatin is not a peculiar feature of the Drosophila genome, but appears to be widespread among higher ...

Constitutive heterochromatin studies in patients with solid tumors

Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, 1986
Constitutive heterochromatin of chromosomes 1, 9, and 16 was studied in 101 patients with solid tumors and 85 controls. Lymphocyte cultures were used for performing C-banded chromosome preparations. Two homologous chromosomes were regarded as heteromorphic when there was a 25% difference between their C-band size or when they fell into different ...

Staining of constitutive heterochromatin in mammalian chromosomes with a new fluorochrome

Experimental Cell Research, 1972
Abstract A simple and direct fluorescence staining procedure is described in this note by which chromosomal segments of constitutive heterochromatin and (in the mouse) sites of repetitious DNA can be visualized in mammalian chromosomes with a benzimidazol derivative “33258 Hoechst” belonging to a class of DNA-binding fluorochromes different from ...

Sex determination and Y chromosome constitutive heterochromatin

Current Research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2019
In many animals, including us, the genetic sex is determined at fertilization by sex chromosomes. Seemingly, the sex determination (SD) in human and animals is determined by the amount of constitutive heterochromatin on Y chromosome via cell thermoregulation.
