Short‐term actions of epigalocatechin‐3‐gallate in the liver: a mechanistic insight into hypoglycemic and potential toxic effects

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Epigallocatechin‐3‐gallate (EGCG) acutely inhibited gluconeogenesis and enhanced glycolysis, glycogenolysis, and fatty acid oxidation in perfused rat livers. Mechanistic assays revealed mitochondrial uncoupling, inhibition of pyruvate carboxylation and glucose‐6‐phosphatase, shift of NADH/NAD+ ratios toward oxidation, and loss of membrane integrity ...

Tryptophan metabolite atlas uncovers organ, age, and sex‐specific variations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tryptophan metabolites were analyzed across twelve organs, the central nervous system, and serum in male and female mice at three life stages. We found tissue‐, sex‐, and age‐specific differences, including increased indole‐3‐pyruvate and kynurenine in aging males.

Changing dynamics of bloodstream infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in Germany, 2017–2023: a continued burden of disease approach

open access: yesAntimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control
Background Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat to public health, with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) being major contributors.

Production of antibacterial compounds by a Steely hybrid polyketide synthase in Dictyostelium

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
By selecting appropriate production species under optimised culture conditions, new chlorinated dibenzofuran compounds, which previously could not be analysed in sufficient quantities, were identified from cellular slime mould fruiting bodies. The strong antibacterial activity exhibited by these compounds suggests a link to the ecological function of ...

Exam‐level analysis of lecture capture viewing and student exam performance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study asks how lecture capture relates to exam performance in biology courses with three noncumulative exams. Mixed‐effects modeling separated between‐students from within‐student effects on exam %. Students who watched more recordings earned higher grades, but viewing spikes above a student's own mean, consistent with cramming, predicted small ...
