Merger of Noncompact Binaries: Triggering Mechanisms and Merger Timescales of W UMa Contact Binaries

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The merger of noncompact binaries can produce a variety of significant celestial objects, including blue stragglers, luminous red novae, and others. However, several key details of the merger of noncompact binaries remain unclear.

Life‐Like Ferrous Oxide Microspheres from Kombucha

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Kombucha bacterial cellulose, sodium alginate, and ferrous nitrate self‐assemble into membrane‐enclosed iron oxide microspheres. These microspheres bud daughter vesicles, sustain 24‐h electrochemical oscillations, and filter theta‐band signals.

FS Lupi: a contact binary in poor thermal contact

open access: yes, 1987
The UBV photoelectric lightcurves of the eclipsing binary FS Lupi, observed at ESO, La Silla, during 1982-1984, have been analyzed with a Roche-model-based lightcurve synthesis method.

Reducing Interfacial Separation Force in High‐Speed Constrained‐Surface Projection Stereolithography Using a Dual‐Modulus Silicone Release Film

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A dual‐modulus silicone release film creates distributed stress concentrations at high‐/low‐modulus boundaries, triggering multi‐site crack initiation and rapid interfacial detachment. The architecture lowers the peak separation force by 97.6%, shortens detachment time, and enables stable continuous projection stereolithography at 720 mm h−1, offering ...

Contact tracing of binary stars: Pathways to stellar mergers

open access: yes
Stellar mergers are responsible for a wide variety of phenomena such as rejuvenated blue stragglers, highly magnetised stars, spectacular transients, iconic nebulae, and stars with peculiar surface chemical abundances and rotation rates.

Ultra‐White Elastomeric Coatings for Daytime Radiative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Passive daytime radiative cooling meets elasticity in a new class of ultra‐white silicone coatings. Combining high solar reflectance with strong sky‐window emission, they hold surfaces below ambient temperature under full sunlight while remaining flexible and stretchable. This combination of cooling performance and mechanical flexibility enables energy‐

Using MESA to Test Our Theory of Contact Binary Star Evolution

open access: yes, 2020
A contact binary star system consists of two stars orbiting each other so closely that they share a common atmosphere (Figure 1). Nearly 1% of stars like our sun are contact binaries, yet there is not a comprehensive model of their lives.

High Throughput Aerosol Jet Printing to Operationalize High Aspect Ratio Patterning

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
High‐throughput aerosol jet printing poses distinct limiting mechanisms to the printing process. These include rapidly changing ink chemistries, atomization instabilities, and liquid‐phase spreading. The combination of in‐line heating, process monitoring, and traditional optimization procedures enables rapid printing of high‐aspect‐ratio structures ...
