On the structure of contact binaries. I - The contact discontinuity
The problem of the interior structure of contact binaries is reviewed, and a simple resolution of the difficulties which plague the theory is suggested. It is proposed that contact binaries contain a contact discontinuity between the lower surface of the common envelope and the Roche lobe of the cooler star.

Energy Transfer in Contact Binaries [PDF]
The anomalous mass-luminosity relation for the components of a contact binary system is usually explained by postulating strong energy transfer from the primary to the secondary. It has been assumed that the transfer occurs in the common convective envelope surrounding the two stars, but so far the only attempt at a model for the energy transfer has ...

Close-in companions to contact binary stars
W UMa-type contact binaries are composed of two late-type main-sequence stars, where both components are filling their critical Roche Lobes and sharing a common convective envelope.

A Photometric Study of Near-Contact Binary ZZ Aur [PDF]
The BVR CCD full light curves of ZZ Aur were obtained as one of the near-contact binary observing programs at the Sobaek Mt. Observatory during Feb. 2000 - Feb. 2001. From the present observations, three primary and seven secondary times of minimum light

An Ultraviolet Study of the Near-Contact Binaries [PDF]
Five members of the class of near-contact binaries have been investigated in the ultraviolet using the IUE. The spectra have been analyzed to find masses of two of the systems and to indicate the possibility of mass transfer.

On the Existence of Double-Contact Binaries [PDF]
We present observational evidence relevant to the existence of binaries of the morphological type proposed by Wilson (1979), called double-contact binaries. Consider normal evolution with Roche lobe overflow, in the rapid phase of mass exchange. It is well known that such mass-exchange spins-up the accreting star (most of whose mass is transferred ...

HL Aurigae: A near-contact binary system
. Photoelectric observations of HL Aur were carried out with the 60 cm reflector of Beijing Astronomical Observatory in 1990 and 1994, and the rst photoelectric BV light curves were obtained along with a newly derived ephemeris.
