Rigorous Field-Theoretical Approach to the Contact Mechanics of Rough Elastic Solids

Physical Review Letters, 2008
A statistical field theory is formulated, which allows one to calculate the pressure distribution Pr(p) in a contact formed by an elastic body and a rigid counter face of arbitrary topography. It is a cumulant expansion, which contains Persson's contact mechanics theory as the leading-order term. Our approach provides a framework with which corrections

Applications of Theoretical Contact Mechanics to Solid Particle System Simulation

1988
Summary The paper considers the application of theoretical contact mechanics to computer simulation of dissipative solid particle systems. Theoretical and computational requirements are discussed, and results obtained from simulated impact experiments are presented.

New insights into viscoelastic contact mechanics between rough solids [PDF]

open access: possible, 2014
The optimized design of a large variety of rubber-made engineering applications (e.g. tires, dampers, rubber seals) needs the full solution of many mechanical problems involving viscoelasticity. Particularly interesting is the sliding contact mechanics of rough viscoelastic solids, where, in addition to the convoluted nature of the material response ...
