Analytical stresses in rough contacts

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2010
The pressure distribution generated by rough surfaces contact induces high stresses just beneath the surface. These stresses are at the origin of several failure mechanisms such as wear, crack initiation, etc. Therefore, it is important to be able to predict these stresses.

Calculation of contact stresses at contacts between conical bodies

Journal of Strain Analysis, 1972
A method for calculating the elastic-stress distribution in two axi-symmetrical conical bodies caused by frictionless contact between them is described. Finite-difference methods were used to solve the governing differential equations. Equilibrium and compatibility over the contacting surfaces was achieved by using the finite-difference solutions to ...

A Contact Stress Model for Predicting Rolling Contact Fatigue

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1992
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Predicting fatigue performance in concentrated contacts under thin film (or mixed) lubrication conditions has historically involved various empirical approaches. Typically a lubrication parameter is used in an experimentally derived equation to predict the expected rolling contact performance.

Contact stress in stranded cable

Experimental Mechanics, 1965
An experimental study of interstrand contact stresses existing in a stranded cable while it rests in its supporting clamp has been made using the stress-freezing photoelastic technique. Comparing the results with the Hertz contact-stress theory made it possible to establish criterion for suspension-clamp design.

Intraarticular Contact Stresses with Simulated Ankle Malunions

Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 1994
Peak contact stresses were evaluated in a human cadaver ankle model of ankle fracture malunion. In one set of experiments, changes in peak contact stresses were evaluated for ankles loaded with lateral displacements of the talus and fibula of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm.

Contact stress gradient detection limits of pressensor film

Journal of Biomechanics, 1991
Fuji Pressensor film has been widely used for measurement of contact stresses in articular joints. In relatively smooth contact fields, measurement errors are reported to be in the range of approximately 10-15 percent. However, when local incongruities exist, strong contact stress gradients are present.

Contact stress and rolling contact fatigue of indented contacts: Part I, numerical analysis

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2012
Based on previous studies concerning pressure perturbations due to indents in dry and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, this article presents the indented contact stress distribution and risk integral calculations. Different stress criteria are discussed and an equation predicting the risk integral is proposed.

Contact Stresses Under Combined Pressure and Twist

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1958
Abstract An analytical solution is presented for the case when an elastic sphere is pressed against an elastic half-space and twisted until complete slip occurs. Formulas are derived for the stress and displacement components, their evaluation is illustrated by numerical examples, and comparisons are made with the results of photoelastic

Effective Contact Stresses and Friction

Nature, 1961
THE earliest statement concerning statical frictional forces between rigid bodies is usually attributed to Coulomb (about 1776). The principle of Coulombic friction is that the force (F) required to generate translation of one body relative to another is directly proportional to the external force (W) transmitted across the contact plane, so that: F ...
