Context-adaptive hybrid variable length coding in H.264/AVC
2009 16th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2009It is well observed that the nonzero transform coefficients for block-based hybrid video coding is more clustered in the low frequency region while more scattered in the high frequency region. Based on this observation, hybrid variable length coding (HVLC) was recently proposed, which divides each transform block into low frequency (LF) region and high

New bitstream structure for parallel context-adaptive-variable-length-coding decoding
Journal of Electronic Imaging, 2012A context-adaptive-variable-length-coding (CAVLC) decoder cannot determine an exact start position of the k 'th syntax element until it decodes the ( k - 1 )'th syntax element, which makes parallel CAVLC decoding difficult. We propose a new bitstream structure to maximize parallelism of CAVLC decoding.

A new context-adaptive variable-length coding architecture
International Conference on Automatic Control and Artificial Intelligence (ACAI 2012), 2012In this paper a new context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) architecture proposed particularly aims to be implemented with Field Programmable Logics. The architecture is composed of a macro-pipeline formed by three stages. In the first stage, all coefficients are scanned and syntactic element “level” is encoded partially if needed.

High Performance Context Adaptive Variable Length Coding Encoder for MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 Video Coding
APCCAS 2006 - 2006 IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems, 2006This paper presents a high-performance VLSI architecture for context adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) used in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video coding. Instead of only the coarse-grained 8times8 zero block skipping in the previous design, the proposed design implements the fine-grained zero skipping at the 4times4 block level and the individual ...

Application-Guided Power-Efficient Fault Tolerance for H.264 Context Adaptive Variable Length Coding
IEEE Transactions on Computers, 2017This paper presents a fault-tolerance technique for H.264's Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding (CAVLC) on unreliable computing hardware. The application-specific knowledge is leveraged at both algorithm and architecture levels to protect the CAVLC process (especially context adaptation and coding tables) in a reliable yet power-efficient manner ...

An efficient Context Adaptive Variable Length coding architecture for H.264/AVC video encoders
The 2012 International Conference on Advanced Technologies for Communications, 2012In this paper, we present an efficient hardware implementation of a Context Adaptive Variable Length Coding (CAVLC) module for an H.264/AVC video encoder. To improve timing performance, a three-stage pipeline architecture is proposed including: input data statistical analysis, encoding and packing.

Video-coding systems require a large external memory bandwidth to encode a single video frame. Many modules of the current video encoders must access the external memory to read and write data resulting in large power consumption, since memory-related power is dominant in current digital systems. Moreover, external memory access represents an important
