Northern Gulf of Mexico continental slope

Geo-Marine Letters, 1990
The hummocky continental slope in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico is the result of active salt tectonism and accompanying faulting. Fluid and gassy hydrocarbons rise through the sediment column and along faults causing the formation of gas hydrates, gassy sediments, mud volcanoes and mounds, chemosynthetic communities and authigenic carbonates, reefs ...

Erosion of canyons in continental slopes

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2005
AbstractSonar images of the Atlantic USA continental slope reveal an eroded landscape that appears remarkably similar to subaerial landscapes eroded by surface runoff. Analysis of multibeam data reveals that they are also similar in a number of quantitative aspects, such as similar scaling between channel gradient and contributing area, they show Hack ...

Eddy formation on a continental slope

Journal of Marine Research, 1997
We consider a uniform-density ocean in which the depth-independent horizontal velocity is driven by a two-gyre wind. Numerical solutions of the governing vorticity equation reveal that the solutions with a flat ocean bottom differ greatly from those in which a continental shelf and slope are present along the western boundary. In the ocean basin with a

Chapter 19 Continental Slope Contourites

2008
Publisher Summary Contourite systems are common on many slopes and show both depositional and erosional features. This chapter summarizes key case studies in different slope settings and discusses general and specific characteristics of different types of slope contourites.

Sea level slope along continental boundaries

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1974
The variation of sea level along continental boundaries is studied from a variety of data. Along the western boundaries of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, sea level falls approximately 80 cm between the equator and 40°N or S. Along the eastern boundaries the change in level is about one-third this amount.

Continental Slope Off Apalachicola River, Florida

AAPG Bulletin, 1951
Illustrations are presented which reveal the physiography of a large part of the continental slope in an area not previously covered by hydrographic surveys. Graphic profiles obtained from electronic depth recorders reveal marine domes and details of the continental escarpment and shelf margin.

Ocean Currents Over the Continental Slope

1988
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the different aspects of ocean currents over the continental slope. Continental slopes underlie some 12% of the world ocean's surface area. Their importance to ocean circulation is out of proportion, since most of the major ocean currents flow over them and are in various ways affected by their topography ...
