Stability, resilience and animal production in continuously grazed sour grassveld

Proceedings of the Annual Congresses of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa, 1981
The Jones-Sandland model, popularly used in southern Africa, may be criticised because it ignores firstly the long-term effects of grazing intensity on the acceptability and productivity of pasture or veld, and secondly possible discontinuities in the animal performance - stocking rate relationship.

Continuous and Rotational Grazing for Beef Production

1984
There is great interest in intensive continuous grazing, especially because of the saving in labour, but on the other hand there are some questions in connection with grass quality, animal health and animal production.

Response of lambs to continuous and rotational grazing at four grazing intensities on Midmar Italian ryegrass

Journal of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa, 1986
Reports the results of a study conducted to compare the effect of grazing procedure on the quantity and quality of the pasture as measured by the performance of weaned lambs grazing on Midmar Italian ryegrass; Irrigated Midmar Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was grazed either continuously or rotationally at four grazing intensities by ...

Grazing dynamics of cattle stocked at heavy rates in a continuous and rotational grazed system

Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 1987
Abstract The relationships between grazing patterns of cattle and sward characteristics under two divergent grazing methods, continuous (CG) and rotational (RG) grazing, were determined in grassland sites of a Post Oak ( Quercus stellata ) woodland in Texas from April to November 1981. Year-long rate of stocking in both grazing methods was equivalent

Continuous grazing on Cenchrus ciliarus.

African Journal of Range and Forage Science, 1979
Breeding cattle grazed Cenchrus ciliaris continuously for four years. Excellent calving percentages (mean 95, 25%) and good weaning masses (mean 245 kg) were obtained, the A.D.G.'s being 0, 963 kg for heifers and 1, 075 kg for bulls. The system was planned to eliminate grazing management as a factor. Keywords: botany; breeding; bulls; calving ...

Studies of grazing behaviour in relation to grassland management: III. Rotational compared with continuous grazing

The Journal of Agricultural Science, 1954
1. A series of observations on the grazing behaviour of identical twin cattle on two contrasting systems of pasture management—rotationally and continuously grazed—is described.2. The rotationally grazed cows averaged only 11 min. (day/cow) shorter feeding time and 18 min. shorter ruminating time than their continuously grazed co-twins.

Continuous and Rotation Grazing on Buffalo and Tobosa Grassland

Journal of Range Management, 1951
ROTATION grazing trials were undertaken at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Spur, Texas in 1942 to determine the value of using an intensive grazing period followed by a 2 month rest during the summer months to improve the productivity of native buffalo and tobosa grassland.

A comparison of continuous grazing systems for milk production

Grass and Forage Science, 1978
AbstractIn two experiments conducted with Ayrshire dairy cows in 1974 and 1975 on swards of S23 perennial ryegrass, four systems of continuous grazing were investigated. The leys received 345 and 370 kg ha‐1 fertilizer nitrogen in 1974 and 1975 respectively and were stocked at the rate of five cows per ha.

Can Idle Land be Converted into Continuous Grazing Areas?

Journal of Forestry, 1931
Abstract The general proposition that all land too poor for profitable agriculture should be converted into forests may be accepted too readily. Forestry may not be the wisest use. The author believes that some of such land may be more profitably converted into grazing lands and offers a suggestion for applying the principles of forest ...

Lucerne varieties for continuous grazing

2012
In recent years there has been a growing interest, particularly in organic farming, for grazing lucerne (Medigaco sativa), partly due to problems with white clover fatigue and partly to the wish for higher biodiversity. Therefore, three grazing-tolerant varieties were examined under relatively severe grazing with heifers in two cutting/grazing ...
