Phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates as molecular glues

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol phosphates (IPs) and phosphoinositides (PIPs) regulate diverse eukaryotic processes. Beyond recruiting signaling proteins or acting as structural cofactors, recent studies suggest they mediate protein–protein interactions as natural molecular glues.

An Integrated Procedure for Shape Optimization Applied to Fluid Flow

open access: yesTrends in Computational and Applied Mathematics, 2006
This work proposes an integrated numerical procedure for the shape optimization of fluid flow problems. The procedure is named integrated since it combines various distinct modules for the solution to the problem, such as: geometric modeling, mesh ...

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Vortical control of forced two-dimensional turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A new numerical technique for the simulation of forced two-dimensional turbulence (Dritschel and Fontane, 2010) is used to examine the validity of Kraichnan-Batchelor scaling laws at higher Reynolds number than previously accessible with classical pseudo-

Retention of Local Information in Generation of Subjective Contours

open access: yesVision Research, 1997
Temporal integration characteristics of subjective contour perception was investigated, using the sequential presentation of two pairs of disks with a sector removed. In the first experiment, by matching the contrast of a "real" stimulus, the perceived contrast of the subjective contours was measured as a function of the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA)

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Topographically forced long waves on a sheared coastal current. Part 2. Finite amplitude waves

open access: yes, 1997
This paper analyses the finite-amplitude flow of a constant-vorticity current past coastal topography in the long-wave limit. A forced finite-amplitude long-wave equation is derived to describe the evolution of the vorticity interface.

Static Hand Gesture Recognition Based on Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesJournal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2019
This paper proposes a gesture recognition method using convolutional neural networks. The procedure involves the application of morphological filters, contour generation, polygonal approximation, and segmentation during preprocessing, in which they ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an
