Contourites in the Fram Strait

Sedimentary Geology, 1993
Abstract Multichannel seismic reflection profiles from the Fram Strait show many features that can be attributed to bottom-current influence on the sediments, by comparison with well-known contourite sequences elsewhere. A greater than 2 km thick contourite drift with a smooth internal reflection pattern is observed northwest of Svalbard.

The shallow-water contourite drift formation in the Kara Sea

Океанология / Oceanology
The bottom sediments of the upper part of the contourite drift located in a narrow linear depression belonging to the central part of the Kara Sea shelf were studied for the first time. According to the grain size distribution of the sediments, the drift

Taiwan Strait: An ocean‐current‐dominated shallow‐water setting with a river‐fed detached muddy contourite deposit

Sedimentology
Contourites (contour‐current deposits) are commonly associated with deep‐water environments, but this study documents a shallow‐water, muddy contourite drift in the centre of Taiwan Strait.

Identification of ancient sandy contourites

Geology, 1981
Proposed criteria for the identification of ancient sandy contourites include occurrence (thin beds, reworked sandy turbidites, coarse lag), structure (bioturbated, no regular vertical sequence, orientation of cross-lamination perpendicular to regional downslope paleocurrents), grain size (silt or sand, little mud, low or negative skewness), fabric ...

Muddy contourites in the Baltic Sea: an example of a shallow-water contourite system

Geological Society, London, Memoirs, 2002
Abstract Bottom currents in the Baltic Sea have had a pronounced effect on the nature and distribution of sediments throughout the Holocene. Due to the intermittent nature of water exchange between the North and the Baltic Seas, the flow of bottom currents is impermanent.

A Quaternary carbonate contourite drift system on the Eyre Terrace, Great Australian Bight: implications for the origin of prograding shelf-edge/upper slope clinoforms, southern Australian passive margin

Journal of the Geological Society
An appraisal of the Quaternary shelf-margin succession in the western Great Australian Bight has yielded new insights into the development of this prograding passive margin.

Chapter 22 High-Latitude Contourites

2008
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the best-known Neogene and Quaternary glacigenic contourite deposits in both hemispheres. The Antarctic continental margin and the northern North Atlantic Margin are considered. In mid- to high-latitude areas, an ice-rafted component is commonly presentwithin sedimentary drifts deposited or ...

Reservoir Potential in Contourites: Evidence of Coarse-grained Contourite Facies in the Mozambique Margin

Proceedings, 2018
Summary Although contourites and mixed turbidite/contourite depositional systems are significant to the oil industry, they are still relatively poorly known by this sector, and there is no present-day accepted sedimentological model for sandy contourites.

Thin Bed Contourite Seismic Imaging

Proceedings, 2013
Wavelet (Mathematical Microscope) analysis of seismic data is made fashionable for thin bed precise subsurface imaging and interpretation. 3D seismic data interpretation for subsurface imaging of thin bed contourite systems is integral part of research work .

Contour Currents and Contourite Drifts

2011
Abstract This chapter provides a current state-of-the-art on the contourite systems with a major focus on the modern systems (drifts), the processes of deposition and the diagnostic sedimentological and seismic features. A short overview of the ancient contourite problem is also provided. Firstly, the history of contourites is briefly reminded since
