First simulations of cryoplane contrails [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2002
In this paper the first numerical simulations of condensation trails (contrails) from liquid hydrogen (LH2) fueled aircraft are presented. Such aircraft produces 2.6 times more exhaust water vapor than equivalent aircraft fueled by kerosene; however, combustion of LH2 produces no aerosol particles.

Effect of contrail overlap on radiative impact attributable to aviation contrails

open access: yes, 2020
. Condensation trails (“contrails”) which form behind aircraft are estimated to cause on the order of 50 % of the total climate impact of aviation, matching the total impact of all accumulated aviation-attributable CO2.

Improved Simulation of Particle Number Concentrations Over the US: Integrating a Size‐Resolved Advanced Particle Microphysics Model Into CMAQ

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 16, 28 August 2025.
Abstract Accurate representation of aerosol size distributions and total number concentrations is critical for evaluating particle impacts on climate, clouds, and public health. An Advanced Particle Microphysics model (APM) has been integrated into the USEPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ) to improve its representation of ...

A New Prognostic Parameterization of Subgrid Ice Supersaturation and Cirrus Clouds in the ICOLMDZ AGCM

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract A new cirrus cloud parameterization for the ICOLMDZ atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) is presented. Prognostic equations for cloud fraction, ice water content and cloudy water vapor are introduced, and the processes that affect these quantities are parameterized.

Sensitivity of radiative properties of persistent contrails to the ice water path [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2012
The dependence of the radiative properties of persistent linear contrails on the variability of their ice water path is assessed in a two-stream radiative transfer model.

Aircraft Trajectory Optimization and Contrails Avoidance in the Presence of Winds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
There are indications that persistent contrails can lead to adverse climate change, although the complete effect on climate forcing is still uncertain. A flight trajectory optimization algorithm with fuel and contrails models, which develops alternative ...

The impact of diurnal variations of air traffic on contrail radiative forcing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We combined high resolution aircraft flight data from the EU Fifth Framework Programme project AERO2k with analysis data from the ECMWF's integrated forecast system to calculate diurnally resolved 3-D contrail cover.

Impact on flight trajectory characteristics when avoiding the formation of persistent contrails for transatlantic flights

open access: yesTransportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment, 2018
This paper studies the impacts on flight trajectories, such as lateral and vertical changes, when avoiding the formation of persistent contrails for transatlantic flights.
