Three-Dimensional Trajectory Design for Reducing Climate Impact of Trans-Atlantic Flights [PDF]
The impact of aircraft emissions and contrails on the environment adds an additional aspect to aircraft trajectory optimization. This study developed a three-dimensional trajectory optimization algorithm for trans-Atlantic flights in cruise to generate ...

Optimal aircraft trajectories to minimize the radiative impact of contrails and CO2
The rapid growth of air traffic in the Asia Pacific region in the last decade has brought about the need for more sustainable modes of flight. A key initiative is the development of a Next Generation Air Traffic Management (NG-ATM) system which allows ...

As it becomes increasingly necessary to reduce aviation-related emissions, condensation trails present an additional challenge. These are arguably responsible for the largest contribution to radiative forcing in the sector, but the phenomenon is still ...

Estimating Contrail Climate Effects from Satellite Data [PDF]
An automated contrail detection algorithm (CDA) is developed to exploit six of the infrared channels on the 1-km MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra and Aqua satellites.

Linear contrail and contrail cirrus properties determined from satellite data
AbstractThe properties of contrail cirrus clouds are retrieved through analysis of Terra and Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data for 21 cases of spreading linear contrails. For these cases, contrail cirrus enhanced the linear contrail coverage by factors of 2.4–7.6 depending on the contrail mask sensitivity.

Environmental impacts of the satellite power system (SPS) on the middle atmosphere [PDF]
The heavy lift launch vehicles (HLLV) proposed for use in constructing satellite power systems (SPS) would deposit various contaminants in the middle atmosphere, contaminants that would conceivable have adverse effects on climate and upper air structure.

Entrapment: an important mechanism to explain the shortwave 3D radiative effect of clouds [PDF]
Several mechanisms have previously been proposed to explain differences between the shortwave reflectance of realistic cloud scenes computed using the 1D independent column approximation (ICA) and 3D solutions of the radiative transfer equation. When the

Characteristics of Ice Super Saturated Regions in Washington, D.C. Airspace (2019–2023)
Contrails are estimated to contribute 2% of the Earth’s anthropogenic global warming. Contrails are ice crystal clouds formed by the emission of soot and water vapor from jet engines in atmospheric conditions known as Ice Super Saturated (ISS) regions ...

Simulated 2050 aviation radiative forcing from contrails and aerosols
. The radiative forcing from aviation-induced cloudiness is investigated by using the Community Atmosphere Model Version 5 (CAM5) in the present (2006) and the future (through 2050).
