Stimulus variation and dimensional contrast [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Learning & Behavior, 1989
In two experiments, a maintained generalization procedure was employed to examine stimulus control of pigeons’ responses to a visual wavelength continuum. For both experiments, pigeons’ responses were periodically reinforced during wavelength values from one end of a continuum, while responses during other stimulus values were extinguished.

Pronominal anaphoric strategies in the West Saxon dialect of Old English [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Building on previous studies that have discussed pronominal referencing in Old English (Traugott 1992; van Gelderen 2013; van Kemenade & Los 2017), the present study analyses the pronominal anaphoric strategies of the West Saxon dialect of Old English ...

Dual-color blending based visual LAMP for food allergen detection: A strategy with enlarged color variation range and contrast

open access: yesFood Chemistry: X, 2022
Food allergy has been a serious public health problem around the world. Its prevention relies heavily on the effective avoidance of any contaminated food, making clear and accurate detection very important.

Noise Contrastive Variational Autoencoders

open access: yesCoRR, 2019
We take steps towards understanding the "posterior collapse (PC)" difficulty in variational autoencoders (VAEs),~i.e. a degenerate optimum in which the latent codes become independent of their corresponding inputs. We rely on calculus of variations and theoretically explore a few popular VAE models, showing that PC always occurs for non-parametric ...

On the decline of 1st and 2nd order sensitivity with eccentricity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We studied the relationship between the decline in sensitivity that occurs with eccentricity for stimuli of different spatial scale defined by either luminance (LM) or contrast (CM) modulation.

Contrast variation method applied to structural evaluation of catalysts by X-ray small-angle scattering

open access: yes, 2023
In the process of developing carbon-supported metal catalysts, determining the catalyst particle-size distribution is an essential step, because this parameter is directly related to the catalytic activities.

Testing a key assumption in animal communication: between-individual variation in female visual systems alters perception of male signals

open access: yesBiology Open, 2017
Variation in male signal production has been extensively studied because of its relevance to animal communication and sexual selection. Although we now know much about the mechanisms that can lead to variation between males in the properties of their ...

Superimposition of illusory patterns with contrast variations

open access: yesActa Neurobiologiae Experimentalis, 2005
In psychophysical experiments, a perceived length matching task was performed. The stimuli were made of two spatially superimposed illusory figures that differed in structure and luminance contrast but had the same length and coincided precisely, with their ends matched. The contrast of one of the figures was fixed, and that of the other varied.

Toward Nanodisc Tailoring for SANS Study of Membrane Proteins

open access: yesBioengineering
Although membrane proteins are of major importance in both physiology and disease, they remain less studied than soluble proteins due to the complex amphiphilic environments required to preserve their structure and function.

When the Easy Becomes Difficult: Factors Affecting the Acquisition of the English /iː/-/ɪ/ Contrast

open access: yesFrontiers in Communication, 2021
The degree of similarity between the sounds of a speaker’s first and second language (L1 and L2) is believed to determine the likelihood of accurate perception and production of the L2 sounds. This paper explores the relationship between cross-linguistic
