Lactic Acid Influences Iron Assimilation by a Fungal Pathogen via the Iron Reductive Uptake Pathway. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiologyopen
Lactate modulates iron homeostasis in Candida albicans by repressing the reductive iron uptake pathway, reducing reliance on high‐affinity iron transport. This process promotes intracellular iron accumulation and enhances growth, even in iron‐transport‐deficient strains under iron‐limited conditions.

Extreme weather events threaten biodiversity and functions of river ecosystems: evidence from a meta‐analysis

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 98, Issue 2, Page 450-461, April 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT Both gradual and extreme weather changes trigger complex ecological responses in river ecosystems. It is still unclear to what extent trend or event effects alter biodiversity and functioning in river ecosystems, adding considerable uncertainty to predictions of their future dynamics.

Mechanistic modelling of enzyme‐restoration effects of new recombinant liver‐targeted proteins in acute intermittent porphyria

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 179, Issue 14, Page 3815-3830, July 2022., 2022
Background and Purpose Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is a rare disease caused by a genetic mutation in the hepatic activity of the porphobilinogen‐deaminase. We aimed to develop a mechanistic model of the enzymatic restoration effects of a novel therapy based on the administration of different formulations of recombinant human‐PBGD (rhPBGD) linked

ARID1A‐deficient cells require HDAC6 for progression of endometrial carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 16, Issue 11, Page 2235-2259, June 2022., 2022
Although endometrial carcinoma is considered to have a good prognosis, more than 20% of women die from their disease because they are diagnosed at advanced stages. Here, we show that deficient expression of ARID1A confers increased aggressiveness and metastatic capacity to endometrial cancer cells, while increasing HDAC6 levels.

Fermented goat's milk modulates immune response during iron deficiency anemia recovery

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 102, Issue 3, Page 1114-1123, February 2022., 2022
Abstract BACKGROUND Iron deficiency and iron overload can affect the normal functioning of the innate and adaptive immune responses. Fermented milk products may enhance immune functions, but little is known about the effect of fermented milks on modulation of the immune response during iron deficiency anemia and recovery with normal or high dietary ...

Expanding the Faunal Interpretation of the Cova Eirós (NW Iberia) Middle Paleolithic–Early Upper Paleolithic Record With ZooMS

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Volume 36, Issue 3, Page 576-588, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT The Cova Eirós archaeopaleontological site preserves the most comprehensive archaeostratigraphic sequence in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, with an exceptionally rich record spanning from the Mousterian to the Upper Paleolithic. The extensive fragmentation of the faunal record and the rich taxonomic diversity at this site have limited the

Animal–Plant Interactions Under Defaunation: Consequences for Amazonian Trees of Commercial Interest

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 2, March 2026.
We experimentally investigated the effects of medium‐ and large‐sized mammal defaunation on the removal and fate of seeds from economically important forest species in Amazonian forests. Our results show that mammal exclusion significantly reduced seed removal, although the magnitude of this effect varied among plant species.
