Control of decoherence with no control [PDF]
Common philosophy in control theory is the control of disorder by order. It is not exceptional for strategies suppressing quantum decoherence. Here we predict an anomalous quantum phenomenon. Suppression of decoherence can be made via more disordered white noise field, in particular white Poissonian noise.

Two recent examinations of management practices in three federal departments provide contemporary evidence of the need to incorporate procedures like those of the Sarbanes‐Oxley Act in the public sector. Although each department established what appeared to be well‐designed internal controls, all lacked sufficient monitoring and assessment of the ...

Asymptotic controllability and optimal control
We consider a control problem where the state must reach asymptotically a target while paying an integral payoff with a non-negative Lagrangian. The dynamics is just continuous, and no assumptions are made on the zero level set of the Lagrangian. Through an inequality involving a positive number $\bar p_0$ and a Minimum Restraint Function $U=U(x)$ --a ...

Control your controls and conclusions [PDF]
Editor,—In a retrospective study, Kerr and coworkers investigated formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissues (stomach, trachea, and lung) of 32 infants who had died of SIDS, and eight control cases, with nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and ELISA of the amplicons. A child was considered as infected with H pylori if the optical density of the ELISA

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Controlling Controlling Shareholders
The rules governing controlling shareholders sit at the intersection of the two facets of the agency problem at the core of public corporations law. The first is the familiar principal-agency problem that arises from the separation of ownership and control. With only this facet in mind, a large shareholder may better police management than the standard

What is the motivational effect of imposing a minimum effort requirement? Agents may no longer exert voluntary effort but merely meet the requirement. Here, we examine how such hidden costs of control change when control is considered legitimate. We study a principal-agent model where control signals the expectations of the principal and the agent ...
