Direct examination of medical devices that have been foci of chronic device-related bacterial infections has shown that the causative organisms grow predominantly in slime-enclosed biofilms. These adherent biofilms are inherently resistant to host defences (antibodies, phagocytes) and to conventional antibiotic therapy.
